Baby slings and carriers are an ideal way of getting around and about with your baby.

But, just as when you are doing anything with your baby, it is important to take care when you use a baby carrier or baby sling.

Here are a couple of suggestions to keep in mind if you are considering using a sling, pouch or carrier for your baby.

  • Just hold the baby as if you were going to nurse. Don’t be nervous, you can always hold your baby with your hands.

  • Make sure that the sling you purchase encourages safe positioning for your baby. e.g. slings and carriers which allow you to see your baby’s face at all times are ideal.

  • Make sure that your baby’s face is not pressed against the fabric of the carrier or against the body of the wearer.

  • Read the instructions for use for your carrier or sling and ensure that you use it only according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

  • Care for your baby sling or carrier in the manner advised by the manufacturer. E.g. the integrity of some baby carriers may be affected when machine washed.

  • Be aware of what you are doing and your environment when carrying your baby. For example, take extra caution around hot liquids.

You can always bring to a Sling Meet or consult an adviser in a sling library.
