If you make the decision to breastfeed then it stands to reason that you are going to want to make life as easy as possible There are hints and tips you can follow to help make breastfeeding a little easier however remember that breastfeeding is very much an individual journey. Always do what feels best for you and your baby, rather than setting yourself standards but what other people have achieved, as everyone is different.
So, what steps could you be taking to make your breastfeeding journey a little easier?
1 – Relaxation
If you get yourself worked up and stressed about the whole situation then you’ll find that the whole process becomes much more hard work. Remember that you can only do what you can do, so relax and approach breastfeeding in a calm way as much as possible.
2 – Timing Isn’t Important
As much as it is lovely to get your baby into a routine, firstly concentrate on breastfeeding. Both you and your baby are going through some massive changes – get breastfeeding sorted (feed when the baby is hungry) and then you can work towards sorting out more of a scheduled routine for your baby.
3 – Preparation is Key
The last thing you want is to sit down to feed and realise you don’t have everything you need within easy reach. Put together a bag or basket of everything you might need when it comes to feeding and then go from there – blankets, clothes, change of clothing and anything else you might need can easily be stored together and then just reached for when needed.
4 – Ask Questions
The whole process of breastfeeding can seem a little bit daunting, especially if this is your first time. Make sure you ask your health visitor any questions that you have when you get the chance. If there is someone you trust and they have been through breastfeeding a child themselves then you could ask them to sit in on a session and give you reassurance that what you are doing is perfectly fine.
5 – Get Latched On
The latching on part can sometimes seem like the biggest battle but it is so important to get this right. Read up advice and ask your health visitor on how you can make latching on easier as this will prevent your breasts from becoming too sore.
